A bowler hatted man stands next to a US Mail package box, the first models of which were introduced in 1894 by the Van Dorn Ironworks of Cleveland. Behind it is a Dormeus style post mounted letter box introduced in 1889. Originally, letter boxes were designed to be attached to lampposts, and were painted blue or red, which led to confusion with police and fire call boxes.
